Jackfruit Biryani Recipe

Jackfruit Biryani is a good alternative for people who are or have turned vegetarian. Jackfruit somewhat gives a great taste to biryani and I prefer it over veg biryani. Biryani happens to be my favourite from Indian cuisine, love the aroma and the spicy taste of Biryani. Credit probably goes to the addition of saffron, garam masala, rose water and bay leaf which imparts color and aroma to this delicious dish- Biryani.

Jackfruit has many health benefits. Look at the picture below-

And here goes the recipe.

Ingredients for jackfruit biryani

-Add ground nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves to the boiling water in which you will add rice to cook. Cook Rice till it is 3/4th cooked and drain water. Keep it aside.

-soak saffron in water.

-Deep fry 1 to 2 onions and cashew nuts in butter.

-Make paste of garlic and ginger.

Note- In case you do not have biryani masala, you can use ground spices and garam masala to make a mixture. Just grind coriander and cumin with garam masala ingredients.

Instructions :

Let’s begin with taking the boiled jackfruit pieces and mincing them.

In a skillet, heat oil and add bay leaf and Red chili. Fry onions and the mashed Jackfruit together so that the flavor of onions blends in with it. Frying for 5 minutes would be enough. Add garlic, ginger paste to it and fry for another five mins on low heat. Add salt to taste.

Now add 1 tbs. of biryani masala to it. Turmeric powder is optional. Add pepper and chili powder next and fry for another 2 mins.

Once done, Take a Pot and add to it, 1/2 of the rice at bottom, then spread 1/2 of the jackfruit mix we prepared over it. Now add one more layer of rice on it and repeat the above process. You can add as many layers as you want or be done with one layer.Pour the saffron water on it and garnish with the deep fried onions and cashew nuts. you may also add rose water and coriander leaves. Cover the pot and cook on low heat for five minutes.

Serve it hot with raita or curry. I like raita and manchurian or thick gravy curry with biryani.
